Women, Nature, and the Path of Change: When Women Lead Amidst the Climate Crisis is a reflective account of women’s leadership rooted in daily lived experiences during the climate crisis. The book draws upon the voices of often-marginalized women—women who must travel further to secure clean water, contend with declining food production, and shoulder multiple layers of labor, all while caring for their families, communities, and surrounding environments.

Drawing on field experiences from the EmPower II Program—implemented by UN Women and UNEP in partnership with the Women Research Institute Consortium in Indonesia—this book documents how women in West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, and Aceh have transformed vulnerability into strength. Through initiatives ranging from community-based water management, spring conservation, and waste-to-energy and organic fertilizer production to the strengthening of local food systems and seed banks, as well as the development of collective economies, women have emerged as key actors in climate change adaptation and mitigation.

This book not only presents inspiring stories but also links them to a structural analysis of gender inequality in climate policy. Through an analysis of gender-responsive baseline data and reflections from a series of policy dialogues, the book highlights the urgency of strengthening the National Action Plan on Gender and Climate Change (RAN-GPI), as well as the importance of regulatory frameworks, funding, and monitoring systems that prioritize the experiences of women and vulnerable groups.

More than just a program report, Women, Nature, and the Path of Change is a space of recognition—acknowledging that women’s leadership in confronting the climate crisis is real, ongoing, and transformative. This book invites readers to see that the path of change is not merely formulated in policy arenas but is being—and has already been—forged by women, spanning from the community level to the national agenda.
